Cognitive models describe writing as a set of processes, such as planning, putting ideas into words, and reviewing, that a writer coordinates at the same time. These processes share limited working memory and executive attention, so heavy demand from one leaves less capacity for the others. Writing from sources adds to this load: in a study of 18 students' research papers, writers worked from single sentences in their sources, and none of the papers summarized a source as a whole. Keeping sources and citations beside the draft is meant to ease this load, which is the premise of this editor's cite-while-you-write design.
